Iranian-Dutch Katayoun dedicates this show to the sonic imaginaries of Iran’s 70’s; a time when prominent Iranian musicians and artists including Googoosh, Farhad Mehrad, Black Cats, and Zia covered English soul, blues, and funk tracks by Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, and Boney M.
These interesting musical explorations not only reflect the country's complex relations with the United States, intersected by a colonial dynamic and notions of 'modernization', but also with visions of freedom, sociability through collaboration, and the identification of oppressed people internationally through music. This show also includes a cover of the iconic folk hit ‘Jolene’ by Dolly Parton and 1960s hits by influential bands like The Beatles, The Mamas and Papas, and The Animals.
