Outsiders: La Monnaie
This month, la Monnaie is presenting The Nose by Dmitri Shostakovich. Aside from its 1920's spiky score, the opera features a breathtaking percussion interlude in its first act.
Although percussion is not usually at the forefront of classical music, some composers have created musical pieces almost entirely dedicated to this family of instruments. From bongo drums and marimbas to glockenspiels, woodblocks and bass drums, today we embark on a bouncy, jerky journey.
Gérard Grisey - Le Noir de l'Etoile
Iannis Xenakis - Rebonds A & B
Lou Harrison - Canticle No. 1
Steve Reich - Music for Pieces of Wood
Edgard Varèse - Ionisation
John Cage, Lou Harrison - Double Music
Carlos Chávez - Toccata for Percussion
Darius Milhaud - Concerto for Percussion And Small Orchestra
Steve Reich - Drumming
Dmitri Shostakovich - The Nose - Interlude
Philip Glass - P: Concerto Fantasy for 2 Timpanists and Orchestra, I., II. & IIIa.
